We began this publication with the original intent to share the stories of deserving women involved in Texas politics but our mission transformed beneath our fingertips once we initiated our research team. With women only holding 20.4% of elected office in Texas, we felt that the Lone Star Parity Project held a greater significance if we used the stories we transcribe to not only humanize women in Texas politics but to also capture resources that can be utilized by female candidates in their respective corners of Texas. The current standard for political parity in Texas is unacceptably low but we are here to help increase the percentage of women in public office.
I began my trek into politics when I ran for City Council at the age of 18 in Wylie, Texas. This has allowed me to bring a unique personal experience to the Lone Star Parity Project that can be both relatable and informative to the women we serve. Though I did not win my campaign for city council, I have crafted my education and career around getting women into public office by working with various non-profits and presenting research on political candidacy for women. These experiences helped catapult me into a career dedicated to political parity.
To me, political parity is the promise that the decisions, laws, rules, and expectations set forth for society will be actively representing all voices equally and proportionally. Parity is not just the push to create an equal number of women to men in elected office but rather an equal number of active voices in elected office introducing the intersectionality of women. We want women with a healthy mixture of backgrounds, ethnicities, socioeconomic statuses, sexual identities, ability differences, etc. to find a seat at the electoral table. Everyone's personal experiences are unique in the sense that it shapes their various values and beliefs. We aren't pushing for a token number of women to serve in elected office but instead fighting for an equal number of women, from all walks of life, to actively represent the variety of values and beliefs present in our world.
Join us as we launch the Lone Star Parity Project with hopes of shifting the balance of elected representatives to help us reach PARITY!
